Sanfengsi town is located in the east of Huarong County. Before 1949, it belonged to Banqiao township. In 1949, it was divided into four districts and one district. In 1956, the district was withdrawn and the township was merged into sanfengsi township. In 1958, the first commune in the county was established, named Huayi commune. In 1961, the scale of the commune was reduced and three communes were set up. Sanfengsi town was established in 1984.

The town mainly produces grain, cotton and fresh fish. In 2001, the town vigorously adjusted its industrial structure, planting 12000 mu of watermelon, 2000 mu of beans and 2000 mu of Xianglian. Sanfeng temple is an ancient market town with a long history. According to Huarong County annals of Wanli in Ming Dynasty, Sanfeng temple was built in Eastern Han Dynasty, which was called "Shengguo", Wei Dynasty was called "Xingguo", and Western Jin Dynasty was given its present name. The name of Gai temple was granted three times, so later generations called it Sanfeng temple. It can also be said that there was a rumor among the people that the emperor visited the South and begged for permission from children, old people and women three times.
