Yongdingmen tower
Yongdingmen tower is located at the southernmost end of yongdingmennei street, yongdingmenwai street. It is the largest of the seven towers in the outer city of Beijing. It is also the starting point of the traditional central axis of Beijing (from Yongdingmen to Zhonggulou). Yongdingmen tower was built in 1553, but only the tower was built at that time. In 1564, a new urn was built. In 1750, the archery tower was built again and the urn was rebuilt. So far, the Yongdingmen gate was completed.
In 1900, after the Allied forces of eight countries occupied Beijing, they demolished the East and west walls of Yongdingmen urn city for the construction of railway. In 1951, in order to improve the traffic condition around Yongdingmen, the urn of Yongdingmen was completely demolished. In 1957, the archery tower and City Tower of Yongdingmen were demolished, and the river channel of the moat changed from the original "Ji" shape to the current "Yi" shape.
In 2005, with the joint efforts of the government, experts and scholars, Yongdingmen tower was rebuilt. After reconstruction, the Yongdingmen tower has maintained its original historical appearance, with a total height of 26 meters, an east-west length of 31.4 meters, a north-south width of 16.96 meters, and a double eaves Xieshan loft style building. There are seven rooms on the second floor of the pavilion, with triple eaves of grey tiles.
Yandun
Yandun, also known as "Yandun", is a square pier with narrow top and wide bottom. It is located in the south of yongdingmenwai railway bridge in yongdingmenwai street. It was first built in the Yuan Dynasty. According to documents, there were five towns in Beijing in the yuan and Ming Dynasties, and Yandun was the town in the south. Because the south is a fire in the "five elements", so the beacon towers should be built. Yandun was only an earthen platform when it was first built in the Yuan Dynasty. It was only built with bricks when Beijing built the outer city in 1553. On Yandun stands a stele made by Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty, which is one of the famous steles in Beijing.
In 1984, Yandun was announced as the third batch of municipal cultural relics protection units by Beijing Municipal People's government.
