Introduction to the Dragon Boat Festival (Suzhou Dragon Boat Festival custom)

Applicant: Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province

Suzhou's may Dragon Boat Festival has a long history, rich content, participation of the whole people, and has been prosperous for a long time.

The origin of Suzhou Dragon Boat Festival can be traced back to the commemoration of Wu Zixu, a famous general of the state of Wu in the spring and Autumn period. With the development of social economy and culture, the Dragon Boat Festival, which started in memory of Wu Zixu, has gradually evolved into an annual grand carnival in Suzhou, forming a set of folk activities corresponding to the local natural conditions, production and life, economic characteristics and cultural development. These activities can be divided into four categories. The first category is the large-scale Dragon Boat Show; the second category mainly shows the wisdom of Suzhou people to adapt to nature and improve their life, such as picking herbs, hanging mugwort leaves, hanging calamus, etc.; the third category shows Suzhou's long-standing silk culture and unique clothing culture, such as pebasso; the fourth category shows zongzi and Dragon Boat Festival rice as its core content.

The Dragon Boat Race and other large-scale activities of Suzhou Dragon Boat Festival were once interrupted during the "Cultural Revolution" and have been restored in recent years. Other kinds of Customs continue in Suzhou residents to varying degrees, but young people know less and less. These traditional customs must take measures to protect, in order to continue to inherit.
