Five hundred Luohan hall is located in Jiuhua Mountain scenic spot in Chizhou, Anhui Province. With a total construction area of more than 1000 square meters, the 500 Luohan hall is a palace like structure, coordinated with the centenary palace, forming a castle like building complex built on the cliff. Five hundred Arhats are worshipped in the five hundred Arhats hall. The whole hall is magnificent. Five hundred Luohan hall is the unique landscape of Jiuhua Mountain, which is the only one in Foshan. According to legend, in the first year of Later Zhou Xiande (954), Daoqian Zen master, with the permission of King Qian Zhongyi of Wu and Yue, moved the statues of the sixteen great scholars under the Xuefeng pagoda to Jingci temple to create 500 Luohan hall. There are also legends about Luohan cave or bamboo forest holy monk temple in famous mountains all over the world. For example, there are 500 Luohan caves in Songshan Mountain of Henan Province. The existing 500 arhat halls include Biyun temple in Beijing, Baoguang temple in Chengdu, Lianhua Temple Grottoes in Gansu, Xiyuan temple in Suzhou, Qiongzhu temple in Kunming, Huating temple in Xishan, Guiyuan temple in Wuhan, etc. Among them, 500 Arhats in Lianhua Temple grottoes are carved in the second year of Shaosheng (1095). In addition, there are 500 arhat halls in Beijing, Chengdu and Kunming.

The origin of the name

Five hundred Arhats hall, as its name suggests, is the place where five hundred Arhats are worshipped. Its full name is five hundred Arhats hall. Among the five hundred disciples who followed the Buddha to listen to the Dharma preaching, the second refers to the five hundred bhikkhu who participated in the first or fourth gathering of Sanzang in the history of Indian Buddhism. The third refers to the saying that five hundred Arhats were transformed by five hundred wild geese (see Xianyu Sutra). The fourth refers to the saying that five hundred Arhats were formerly known as five hundred bats (see Tang Xuanzang's records of the western regions of the Tang Dynasty). In fact, five hundred Arhats are not recorded in any Buddhist sutra The name of the Han Dynasty, 500, is just too many words. As for how 500 Arhats came to China and their names! However, due to the large number of 500 Arhats, it was difficult to distinguish their faces at the moment, so that some people took the opportunity to sneak in and pretend to be Arhats. For example, in the Luohan Hall of Baoguang temple in Chengdu, Kangxi and Qianlong were modeled as the venerable of sheyeduo and Zhifu respectively. In Buddhism, the fruit of arhat is inferior to that of Buddha and Bodhisattva, so their status is lower than that of them. The place where they live can only be called "Tang" but not "dian".

Historical heritage

In the first year of Later Zhou Xiande (954), with the permission of King Qian Zhongyi of Wu and Yue, Daoqian Chan Master moved the 16 statues of great scholars under the Xuefeng tower to Jingci temple and created 500 Luohan hall. There are also legends about Luohan cave or bamboo forest holy monk temple in famous mountains all over the world. For example, there are 500 Luohan caves in Songshan Mountain of Henan Province. Beijing, Chengdu, Kunming 500 Luohan Hall

The 500 Arhats of Biyun temple in Beijing have the most considerable scale in North China. Five hundred Arhats of Baoguang temple in Chengdu, Qiongzhu temple in Kunming and Huating temple in Xishan are all painted sculptures. The Luohan statue of Baoguang temple in Chengdu is about 1.5 meters high. It is majestic and well preserved. It was carved according to the original appearance of Tianning Temple in Changzhou in 1851, the first year of Xianfeng in Qing Dynasty. The 500 Arhats of Qiongzhu temple are the works of Li Guangxiu in Hezhou, Sichuan Province, who brought five of his disciples to Yunnan. It took seven years to complete since 1890.
