Chen Lanbin's former residence, built in 1875, is located in Huangpo village, Huangpo Town, Wuchuan City, Guangdong Province. It was announced as a cultural relic protection unit of Wuchuan County in 1983, a key cultural relic protection unit of Zhanjiang City in 1999, and a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province in 2000.

Chen Lanbin's former residence is a two-way brick and wood quadrangle structure building, built in the first year of Guangxu (1875) of Qing Dynasty, covering an area of more than 400 square meters. Because this is where Chen Lanbin receives officials and guests, local people also call it "official hall". The former residence is relatively complete, but its cultural relics have been lost for a long time. After entering the door, there is a wing room. Further on, there is a large patio. There are corridors and wing rooms on both sides of the patio. Behind the patio is the hall. It is said that Chen Lanbin's former residence is the place where he receives officials and guests, so the masses also call it the "official hall". The rooms on both sides of the patio are hung with a brief introduction of Chen Lanbin's deeds, and the handwriting on the ink-jet adhesive paper is very fuzzy. There is a portrait of Chen Lanbin in an official uniform in the middle of the "official hall", with a couplet on both sides: "there should be no talent in the world, but there should be a way to achieve it. How can we count the saints and virtues, but we should use their strengths?" written by Chen Lanbin in Guangxu Geng yinchunyue. In 2005, with the support of the cultural departments of Guangdong Province and Zhanjiang City, Wuchuan Municipal Bureau of culture, broadcasting and information organized technicians to repair Chen Lanbin's former residence. In the process of repair, the principle of "not changing the original state of cultural relics" was strictly followed.

Chen Lanbin

Chen Lanbin, Li Qiu, is a well-known figure in the history of modern Chinese diplomacy. In 1816, he was born in Huangpo village, Wuchuan. He was smart and studious when he was young. In his 20s, he paid tribute to the capital and became famous as Gongqing. He has traveled to Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu and other places to study ancient and modern military affairs.

In the third year of Xianfeng (1853), he became a Jinshi, selected a rare scholar in the Imperial Academy, filled the National Museum of history, compiled a scattered library, and later served as the principal of the Ministry of punishment. In the eighth year of Xianfeng, the Qing government chose Chen Lanbin to manage the Westernization affairs. He was firm and gentle in his contacts with foreign powers. In the third year of tongzhi (1863), Chen Lanbin was ordered to try the accumulated cases, and a large number of unjust cases were cleared; he restored Daming prefecture to relieve the flood victims, and saved hundreds of thousands of victims. At that time, Chen Lanbin was appointed by the Prime Minister of the Qing Dynasty to raise funds for coastal defense. In 1872, the Qing government dispatched Chen Lanbin as the supervisor and Rong Hong as the Deputy Supervisor, leading four groups of teenagers to study in the United States. When he returned to China in the autumn of 1875, the Qing government ordered him to send envoys to the United States, zherbas (Spain), Peru and other countries. Emperor Guangxu appointed Chen Lanbin as prime minister and Minister of state affairs. In 1884, 68 year old Chen Lanbin returned home due to illness. He died in 1894 at the age of 79. Chen Lanbin has written a brief account of Shi Mei, fan Cha Shi Cao and Shi Mei Bai Yong, and compiled Gao Zhou Fu Zhi and Wu Chuan Xian Zhi.

present situation

Chen Lanbin's former residence is relatively dilapidated in the early years due to its long history. In 2005, the Cultural Department of Wuchuan City restored the tile surface and wall area of the former residence.
