Located in the western coastal area of Danzhou City, Hainan Province, the geographical scope of the nature reserve is 109 ° 04 ′ 50 ′～ 109 ° 06 ′ 31 ′ E and 19 ° 40 ′ 00 ′～ 19 ° 41 ′ 29 ′ n, covering an area of 3.3 square kilometers. It was established with the approval of the former Danxian people's Government in April 1992. The main protection objects are the coral reefs and their ecological environment in the coastal area of the island.

Phosphorite island itself is a coral island composed of corals, shell gravels, various corals, shells, beach cliffs and secondary coral reef gravels. It belongs to the northern margin of coral reef distribution area and is an important base for studying the regional distribution, development history, biological composition and changes of coral reefs in Beibu Gulf and South China Sea.

The marine ecological environment and biodiversity of phosphorite island and its surrounding areas are maintained by the management activities of the reserve. So as to maintain the marine living resources related to coral reefs. The local marine ecological environment is basically well preserved, but the coral reef state is in natural decline.

There are 26 kinds of corals in the waters of phosphorite island. The coverage of living corals is about 5%. The relatively concentrated area of corals is 2-3 meters deep, mainly distributed in the South and west of the reef island.

The Department in charge of the nature reserve is the Marine Bureau of Danzhou City, Hainan Province. There is no special management organization. The marine administrative department of Danzhou City is responsible for the management.
