East Coast National Scenic Area

The East Coast National Scenic Area was established in 1987, and green island was planned to enter this scenic area in 1990. In the north of the scenic spot is hualianxikou, in the south is xiaoyeliu, in the East is the 20 meter isobath of the sea area, in the west is the provincial highway 11, and in the west is the first mountain ridge. Along the way, there are many scenic spots, such as sweet potato hill, stone terrace, boat on xiuguluan River, Baxian cave, stone umbrella, wushibi, sanxiantai, Donghe bridge, shuishangliu, Shanyuan bathing beach, xiaoyeliu and so on. In addition, the Green Island, 33 kilometers east of Taitung, is also a bright pearl of the national scenic spot on the east coast

Nature and humanity

The natural landscape of the east coast is affected by plate collision and sea erosion. The junction of plate action is from the outer sea of Hualien to the south of beinanxikou. The collision causes the uplifting action and uplifts the sea erosion caves and platforms which are located around the sea level. This kind of landscape formed by wave erosion is the main landscape of the east coast of Taiwan.

The boating service center in Ruisui provides a boating service at xiuguluan river. The route of boating starts from Ruisui boating service center and ends at Changhong bridge.

Here is a relic of Taiwan's prehistoric culture, Changbin culture. The discovery site of Changbin culture is Baxian cave. Because of uplift, Baxian cave has left several sea erosion caves at different altitudes. Professor Song Wenxun excavated the Neolithic cultural layer and Paleolithic cultural layer here. These caves are connected by footpaths, along which visitors can pass Lingyan cave, Chaoyin cave, Yong'an cave, Hailei cave, Qianyuan cave and Kunlun cave. Paleolithic relics are found in Chaoyin cave, Hailei cave and Qianyuan cave.

There are many AMI tribes in this scenic area. Every year from July to August is the harvest festival of AMI people. The tribe people will hold 3-7 days of activities and entertain guests with millet wine and glutinous rice wine.

Although there are rich geographical and cultural landscapes, the east coast of East Taiwan is also the area that bears the brunt of typhoon season in summer. The destruction of traffic and recreational facilities caused by typhoon is a challenge to the development of tourism here.
