There is a natural ancient cave 482 meters to the west of the main peak of Taohua island. The height of the cave is about 2.5 meters, covering an area of more than 20 square meters. The top of the cave is covered by a huge stone. Shengyan temple is named after the cave.

Shengyan temple was built in 1865, 138 years ago, for the villagers. However, before the temple was built, there were caves for people to practice and worship Buddha. According to the records of Dinghai hall compiled in the reign of Emperor Guangxu of Qing Dynasty, "Shengyan temple was built in the fourth year of Tongzhi, built by Li people.".

After liberation, the temple gradually collapsed. In 1986, Pingji was rebuilt in the valley below the cave. Xinsiji is 460 meters above sea level, with beautiful peaks on three sides, steep mountains, and many strange rocks. The temple stands on the mountain and is exquisitely constructed.

In 1994, three left and right wing rooms were rebuilt in front of the temple, and a platform gate was added. The temple seat faces south, with a width of 4.35 meters and a depth of 4.00 meters. A gate is set in the middle, with a height of 1.80 meters and a width of 1.50 meters. Three characters "Shengyan Temple" are engraved on the gate. The temple is well preserved and has certain historical value.
