The relic pagoda is one of the carriers of China's 5000 year history of civilization, which is respected as a Buddhist pagoda by Buddhist circles. Worshiping the relic pagoda is a way for people to express their conversion and gratitude to Buddhas.

historical background

The relic tower of Yongyou temple, also known as the Liuhe tower, is located in the northeast of Wanshu garden of the summer resort. In 1751, Emperor Qianlong visited the South and saw that Liuhe Pagoda in Hangzhou and Baoen temple in Nanjing were tall and beautiful. In order to repay his mother's kindness, he imitated two pagodas in the capital, built Yongyou temple in the villa the following year, and imitated another pagoda here in the 19th year of Qianlong. After that, the two pagodas of the capital were destroyed by fire and collapsed. Emperor Qianlong, on the one hand, pursued the responsibility and on the other hand, took warning to reinforce the Yongyou Temple Pagoda of the villa. It was not until 29 years ago that it was completed, which lasted for 10 years. Most of the buildings of Yongyou temple have been destroyed now, and only a few stone tablets are left. One side of the stele in the 29th year of Qianlong was engraved with the record of the relic pagoda of Yongyou temple made by the emperor, and the other side was engraved with the hundred rhymed poems of the summer resort made by the emperor, which is an important historical material for studying the construction of the summer resort.

Brief introduction to temples

The tower is an octagonal nine story dense eaves building, 66 meters high, built on the high platform. On the first floor, the pagoda is surrounded by Baoxia, with stone statues and esoteric murals on eight walls. The eaves and beams on each floor are made of glass. The top of the tower is made of gold-plated copper and weighs about 400 kg. The tower breaks through the horizontal field of wanshuyuan and is one of the scenic spots of the summer resort.
