Historical evolution

As early as the late 1970s, due to the construction of the Tsuen Wan line of the MTR, the Lai Chi Kok bay within the Lai Chi Kok bridge (Kwai Chung Road) was filled up, and the swimming sheds and rowing grounds in the Bay disappeared. The lychee Kok swimming pool and indoor gymnasium at the north end were first completed in the 1980s. The construction of Lai Chi Kok Park in the south end was also implemented. The first phase was opened in 1990.

In the early 1990s, the West Kowloon reclamation project turned the Lai Chi Kok bridge and the sea area south of Mei foo new estate into land, and the Lai Chi Kok Park was further extended to serve as a buffer zone between the West Kowloon Highway and Mei foo new estate. However, some of the sites were affected by the KCRC Guangxi railway project. From 1998 to 2003, the KCRC was responsible for the replacement of all facilities affected by the West Rail Project in Lai Chi Kok Park. The second and third phases of the development also made corresponding amendments to carry out the construction and improvement of facilities. The West Rail Mei foo station was also covered with a garden.

Facilities in the park

Lai Chi Kok Park is divided into three phases with a total area of 17.65 hectares. A number of recreational and sports facilities are provided in the park. Adjacent supporting facilities are the swimming pool, gymnasium, hard ground football field and Library of Lai Chi Kok Park.

Lingnan style

Lingnan wind, a Chinese style park, was officially opened to the public on November 11, 2000. The daily opening hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. As the park is located in the reclaimed area of Lai Chi Kok in Kowloon, and Lai Chi is a famous fruit in Lingnan, it is built in the traditional Lingnan style. The park covers an area of 12500 square meters, and the waterscape area is about 2600 square meters, accounting for about 20% of the total park area.

The whole park is divided into ten scenic spots. The buildings in the park extend outward around the central pool, with courtyard corridors as the layout. Its architectural art also adopts Lingnan style, such as pottery, tile, gray plastic, stone carving and wood masonry, while the rockery stone is mainly made of Yingde Taihu stone. In addition, there are many couplets in the garden, written by Liang Qichao, Liu Huadong, Li Wentian, Kang Youwei, etc. From the east gate to the eaves of the bridge corridor, the park is decorated with colored optical fiber lighting, which makes the landscape more charming on a moonlit night. Trees are widely planted inside and outside the garden, which is full of shade. In addition, there are exquisite bonsai furnishings for visitors to enjoy.

Cobble path

One of the attractions in the garden is "healthy shoes removal". This is a path paved with pebbles. If you walk back and forth on the path barefoot or in cloth shoes, you can stimulate the nerve reflex area on the sole of the foot and promote the blood circulation of the foot. At different times of the day, visitors like crucian carp can be seen, so pebble path is very popular.

Brick carving

There are two groups of brick carvings carved on the wall of the east gate of the park. The handicrafts are fine and the figures are lifelike, which is worthy of careful appreciation. One group of bricks carved 36 heroes of the outlaws of the marsh. Outlaws of the marsh is one of the four famous works in China, which was compiled by Shi Naian in Yuan Dynasty based on the well-known deeds of Liangshanpo heroes. The story is set in the last years of the Northern Song Dynasty. At that time, 108 heroes gathered in Liangshan park to rob the rich and help the poor. Among them, "timely rain" Song Jiang, "leopard head" Lin Chong, "flower monk" Lu Zhishen, "Black Whirlwind" Li Kui, "Walker" Wu Song are most familiar.

As for the other group of brick carvings, it describes the scene of Eight Immortals crossing the sea. Eight immortals are Cao Guojiu, Li Tie, Zhong Liquan, LV Dongbin, he Xianggu, LAN Caihe, Zhang Guolao and Han Xiangzi; their magic weapons are clapper, gourd, sunflower fan, sword, lotus, flower basket, fishing drum and Dongxiao.

Good health

The park (phase III) has two high-quality routes: red (about 600 m) and green (about 1000 m). The advantages of walking are: enhancing heart function, strengthening blood circulation, improving lung function and respiratory system, reducing blood fat and cholesterol, controlling weight, regulating blood pressure, reducing mental pressure and improving endocrine function. Moderate and correct posture walking is called "high quality walking". Members of the public can choose their favorite route by referring to the signs on the lamp posts along the way. The recommended walking plan is to walk at a pace of 1.6 km in 20 minutes, at least 30 minutes a day and at least three times a week.

Greening configuration

More than 6000 trees and 300 species of trees and shrubs have been planted in the park. A famous brand is hung on the trunk of the plant to facilitate identification by the public.
