During the war
Aoyuan used to be a small island on the Nanxun river with a temple called "aowang Palace". It was destroyed in the war during the Anti Japanese war.
In 1950, to commemorate the liberation of Jimei, Tan Jiageng reclaimed the sea to expand the island and built Aoyuan, which took four years to complete. Aoyuan covers an area of 12300 square meters with magnificent buildings and exquisite stone carvings. The gate of the garden faces north and has a long corridor inside. The two walls are carved with natural scenes and historical characters.
In the center of the garden stands the "Jimei Liberation Monument" inscribed by Mao Zedong. The stele is 28 meters high. The base of the stele is divided into two layers. The top of the stele is covered with glazed tiles. The walls of the stele are surrounded by columns and engraved with couplets and inscriptions written by celebrities, as well as relief pictures of industrial and agricultural production, culture, education and health, insects, fish, birds and animals, flowers, plants and landscapes.
South of the monument is the tomb of Tan Kah kee. The tombstone structure is in the shape of tortoise and longevity, and the tomb cover is inlaid with 13 pieces of hexagonal polished blue stone. There are many relief images of Tan Kah Kee's life story on the arc-shaped bluestone screen wall. A worship pavilion was built in front of the tomb, and the top of the pavilion was painted with "flying sky" pattern.
