Huang's Xiaozong is located in the original site of yanzijiao traditional settlement on Gulangyu Island. It is a ancestral hall of a branch of the Huang family who moved from Tong'an to the island. The building was built in the first half of the 19th century and is one of the earliest existing traditional wooden courtyard style dwellings in Southern Fujian on Gulangyu Island. The building is a courtyard, and there is a shelter on the south side of the original building. Today, only the gate and main room of Huang's Xiaozong are left, and the courtyard covers an area of more than 200 square meters. The gate of the courtyard is of brick and wood structure, with a stone plaque of "Huang Xiaozong" embedded on the top of the stone door frame. The wooden frame is overhanging at the head of the gate, and it is covered with tiles. The main house has three rooms. It is a traditional red brick house in Southern Fujian. The roof is a swallow tail ridge with red tiles. This small courtyard is the residence and preaching place of Western missionaries who first came to Gulangyu Island. In 1842, during their activities on Gulangyu Island, American reformed missionary Gabriel and Dr. Kam Ming rented the building, where Dr. Kam Ming practiced medicine. Therefore, it was the first western medicine clinic in Modern Xiamen. Later, the Huang clan also used this ancestral hall to open private schools. After the reform movement of 1898, they changed their name to "general education school".
