Xiude Temple Pagoda

Xiude temple tower is located 300 meters south of Beiyue temple in Quyang County, Hebei Province. It was built in Song Dynasty. This tower has a peculiar shape, octagonal plane, a total of seven floors, with a height of 32 meters. On the second floor, the tower is very tall, which is different from the traditional loft style and dense eaves style. 110 small tower niches are built around the tower, presenting the beautiful scene of Huayan Dharma world, which is "multi-phase, that is, the size of each other, endless, everything is unimpeded". The architectural world calls it "flower tower".

In 2006, Xiude pagoda, as an ancient building of Song Dynasty, was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit.

historical origin

According to a stone tablet embedded in the body of the pagoda, the age of the pagoda is as follows: "on April 8, the third year of Tianxi in the great Song Dynasty, the villagers such as shuidouyan built the first level of relic pagoda together." It can be seen that the tower was built earlier than the Northern Song Dynasty.

In 1953, a number of white marble Buddhist statues from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty were unearthed under the tower foundation of Xiude temple. Among the chronological statues of Xiude temple, the most were made in Daye period of Sui Dynasty, with a total of 48 bodies, followed by Tianbao period of Northern Qi Dynasty, with a total of 33 bodies. The theme of stone statues in Xiude temple has experienced a process from giving priority to the belief in Sakyamuni and Maitreya to paying too much attention to Amitabha and Bodhisattva. The statues unearthed from Xiude pagoda are now in the Palace Museum and Hebei Provincial Museum.

Existing problems

Xiude Temple Pagoda, as an ancient building of Song Dynasty, was approved by the State Council on May 25, 2006 to be listed in the Sixth Batch of national key cultural relics protection units, but it has not been repaired and protected. It is only surrounded by a square guardrail to prohibit visitors from entering. The damaged part has not been repaired. The entrance of the ancient pagoda is always accompanied by a dung cart. The ancient pagoda is a paradise for birds and animals. The fate of Xiude Temple Pagoda is worrying!
