Shantou University

Shantou University is a provincial University jointly built by the Ministry of education, Guangdong Province and Li Ka Shing Foundation. It is also the only public university continuously funded by Li Ka Shing Foundation, a private foundation in the world. Shantou University Library is funded by Mr. Li Ka Shing and designed by Mr. Li Ka Shing's famous architect Chen Ruixian in Taiwan. It is known as the most beautiful library in Asia. The sculpture "building self and pursuing selflessness" at the entrance is created by Zadok Ben – David, a famous British artist.

Historical evolution

At the beginning of 1979, preparations for Shantou University began.

In May 1980, the Preparatory Committee of Shantou University was established with Comrade Wu Nanshan, Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, as its director. Mr. Li Jiacheng, a famous international entrepreneur, and Mr. Zhuang Shiping agreed to donate a large sum of money to Chaoshan (including Shantou, Jieyang, Chaozhou, Shanwei and other prefecture level cities)

On August 26, 1981, the State Council approved the establishment of Shantou University. In November, Xu Dixin, a famous economist, was the first president.

In 1983, we began to recruit undergraduate students. In the same year, the Ministry of Education approved the reconstruction of Shantou Medical College into the Medical College of Shantou University. In September, it enrolled students for the first time. At the same time, the former Shantou Medical College was incorporated into the medical college.

On New Year's day in 1984, a foundation laying ceremony was held to open the prelude of campus construction.

On June 20, 1986, when Comrade Deng Xiaoping met with Mr. Li Jiacheng in Beijing, he pointed out that "Shantou University should be more open and gradually become a state key university.".

In February 1987, the board of directors of Shantou University was established, and the work of Shantou University was promoted in an all-round way.

In February 1990, the infrastructure project with a total construction area of 200000 square meters was basically completed, and the inauguration ceremony of Shantou University was solemnly held.

In 1991, it was listed as one of the first batch of undergraduate colleges.

In 1993, the University obtained the right to confer master's degree and began to recruit graduate students independently.

In December 1996, Shantou University passed the preliminary examination of the national "211 Project" department.

In 1998, it was added as a doctoral degree conferring authority by the State Council.

In 2001, the mobile post doctoral research station of "basic medicine" was set up. In the same year, the University launched the reform project of internationalization.

In 2002, pathology and pathophysiology became a national key discipline, and the reform of credit system and English improvement program was launched.

In April 2006, it passed the acceptance of the "Tenth Five Year Plan" and "211 Project". To become a member of CDIO International Engineering Education Cooperation Organization in China and lead the reform of CDIO education in China.

In 2007, China's universities ranked 53rd and 14th in the list of science and technology innovation competitiveness. In March, the graduate school was approved to be established (renamed as graduate school in January 2016).

In 2011, the comprehensive reform of independent school running and medical education reform project of Shantou University were listed as the pilot project of comprehensive reform of education in Guangdong Province, and were authorized as the first level discipline of clinical doctor's degree. From May 28 to 29, the fifth annual meeting of the East West Alliance (EWA) with the theme of "globalization of medical education" was held in Shantou University. The medical school of Shantou University and the medical school of the Chinese University of Hong Kong jointly trained undergraduate and postgraduate students, becoming the first school in Mainland China to carry out clinical medical education cooperation with famous universities abroad. In June 2012, Shantou University was jointly built by the Ministry of education, Guangdong Provincial People's government and Li Ka Shing Foundation.

The disciplines of chemistry and clinical medicine have entered the global 1% of ESI (basic science index database). The undergraduate major of Business Administration of Shantou University of business has passed the EPAs international certification, which is the first undergraduate major in Asia to pass the certification.

In March 2015, all undergraduate majors of business school passed EPAs international certification.

On April 9, the Guangdong Israel Institute of technology, jointly organized by Shantou University and Israel Institute of technology, was approved by the Ministry of education to be established. In December 2016, it was officially established by the Ministry of education.

In March 2018, it was selected into the first batch of national new engineering research and practice projects of the Ministry of education. In November, it was selected as the "Key Discipline Construction University of high level university" in the new round of high level university construction plan of Guangdong Province.

In May 2019, Business School of Shantou University officially obtained BGA membership. In August, Shantou University was rated as a national innovation and entrepreneurship typical experience university by the Ministry of education.

In April 2020, Shantou University and Shenzhen Health Committee signed a strategic cooperation agreement.
