They saw a small temple on the island and a pool under the temple. Fujian fishermen call the temple "Miaozi" and the pool "Lake", so the island is called Miaozi lake. Dongji township was established in 1934, with Miaozi Lake as its residence. It was changed to miaozihu Township in June 1935, and then merged with Qingbang and Huangxing township to become Dongji township. On November 13, 1953, miaozihu was liberated and Dongji Township People's government was established. In 1954, it was the residence of Dongji district government office, and miaozihu was restored as a township. In October 1958, it was the miaozihu brigade of Dongji commune, and in 1962, it was changed into miaozihu commune. In 1984, it was restored to miaozihu township. Dongji town was established in 1992.

There are three administrative villages and five natural villages on the island. In 2000, there were 992 households

Go to Dongji and set sail at 8:30 a.m. at Banshengdong Wharf in Shenjiamen, Zhoushan. The return time is 11:00 noon. Usually, there is only one boat every day. On weekends in July and August, there will be one extra boat. Shenjiamen will open at 13:30 p.m. and return to Miaozi lake at 16:00 p.m.
