Jiading Nanxiang Twin Towers

Nanxiang twin pagodas are the oldest of the ancient pagodas in Shanghai. They are also treasures of the brick pagodas in China. They were built from the Five Dynasties to the early Northern Song Dynasty. They were originally built on both sides of the Mountain Gate of Nanxiang temple in Baihe. In 1766, a fire destroyed the ancient temple, but the brick pagoda is the oldest cultural relic in Nanxiang ancient town. Over the past 200 years, the ancient pagoda has gone through many vicissitudes and is in danger. In 1982, according to the remaining components and traces of the ancient pagoda, as well as the actual objects cleaned underground, and referring to a large number of literature, the restoration scheme of the ancient pagoda was finally constructed. Now the new twin towers, with seven levels and eight sides, are 11 meters high. All of them are made of brick, and their appearance imitates the wooden pavilion Pagoda in Jiangnan. The flame shaped pot door, simple straight lattice window, exquisite Dou Gong, delicate fence and beautiful Tasha on the tower show the typical architectural style of Tang and Song dynasties. Its restoration reflects the enthusiasm and wisdom of Shanghai people in protecting national cultural heritage.
