Since the discovery of gold deposits in Jiufen in 1893 (the 19th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu), Jiufen has prospered and a large number of gold prospectors have flocked to it. The small mountain village with only nine households has rapidly developed into a small town with 30000 or 40000 people, ending its tranquility and desolation. After entering the era of Japanese occupation in Taiwan, the Japanese and the Yan Family of Keelung successively owned the mining rights in the area of Jiufen. Especially under the management of the Yan family, Jiufen entered the peak period of gold mining, and also excavated coal mines nearby.
