Wuzhou college was founded in 1985, formerly known as Wuzhou branch of Guangxi University. In October 2003, the former Wuzhou Education College and Wuzhou normal school were merged into Wuzhou branch of Guangxi University. In February 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of education, Wuzhou branch of Guangxi University was upgraded to Wuzhou University, a multi-disciplinary public undergraduate college.

Wuzhou university is located in Wuzhou City, Guangxi, which is a thousand year old city, a hundred year old commercial port and the world's capital of artificial gems. Wuzhou City is the birthplace of Guangxi higher education. In 1928, Guangxi University was founded in Wuzhou.

Wuzhou University enrolls students from 28 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government) in China.
