The predecessor of Chongqing University of technology is the 11th Technical School of the Department of ordnance industry of the national government, which was founded in 1940. In April 1965, it was upgraded to Chongqing Institute of technology, under the fifth Ministry of mechanical industry. After that, the University, together with seven universities, such as Beijing University of technology and Nanjing University of technology, was affiliated to the Ministry of national weapons, namely the seventh branch of Ordnance Engineering. Since 1991, it has been affiliated to China National Ordnance Industry Corporation and has imported a large number of excellent talents for the ordnance industry and national defense construction. In 1999, it was transferred to Chongqing by China National Ordnance Industry Corporation and renamed Chongqing Institute of technology. In 2001, Chongqing Economic Management Cadre College was incorporated as a whole. In 2009, it was renamed Chongqing University of technology with the approval of the Ministry of education.

The school has 1589 teaching staff, including 1388 full-time teachers, 660 senior professional and technical positions, 1047 master's and doctor's degrees, and more than 300 part-time teachers. There are 15 recipients of special government subsidies from the State Council. At present, there are many high-level talents in Chongqing, such as national candidates for the "New Century Talents Project", academic and technological leaders in Chongqing, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in Chongqing, and excellent young and middle-aged backbone teachers in Chongqing universities. At present, there are more than 26000 full-time college students, graduate students and international students.

Taking personnel training as the fundamental task, the university has formed a multi-disciplinary system with coordinated development of science, engineering, arts, management, economics, law, medicine and arts. The school enrolls students from 31 provinces and cities in China, with undergraduate education as the main part and postgraduate education, vocational and technical education, international student education, etc. At present, there are 21 party and government management institutions and 20 teaching institutions. The university has 61 undergraduate specialties, including 4 national characteristic specialty construction points, 2 comprehensive reform pilot specialties, 6 Chongqing Municipal characteristic specialty construction points, 2 comprehensive reform pilot specialties, 10 "three special action plan" characteristic specialties and 3 characteristic discipline specialty groups. At present, there are 11 first-class master's degree authorization points (covering 37 second-class master's degree authorization points), 2 second-class master's degree authorization points, 11 master's professional degree authorization points, and 8 provincial (ministerial) first-class key disciplines.

In recent years, the university has undertaken more than 1100 scientific research projects at or above the provincial and ministerial level, including national "863" high-tech projects, National Natural Science Foundation, National Social Science Foundation, major projects in Chongqing. He has published more than 12000 papers, more than 300 textbooks and works in academic journals and conferences at home and abroad, applied for more than 1200 national patents, obtained more than 1000 authorized or public patents, won 4 National Science and technology progress awards, 1 National Technological Invention Award, 1 China Patent Gold Award, 1 excellent award, and 131 provincial (ministerial) awards. The university has 31 provincial and ministerial level scientific research and innovation platforms, including key laboratory and Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of education, Chongqing Key Laboratory and Engineering Research Center, Industrial Technology Innovation Research Institute, and key research base of Humanities and social sciences. It is a member unit of "Chongqing independent brand automobile collaborative innovation center" approved by the Ministry of education and the Ministry of finance. The Journal Office of Chongqing University of technology publishes five kinds of academic journals.

The school now has Huaxi campus, Liangjiang campus and Yangjiaping campus, with a total area of 2444 Mu and a building area of more than 790000 square meters. The campus is full of trees and elegant environment. It has been rated as one of the top ten "garden style units" in Chongqing, the most beautiful campus in winter in Chongqing, the "top 100 canteens" in Colleges and universities in China, and the "safe campus" model school in Chongqing. Now it has about 2.34 billion yuan of fixed assets, including 310 million yuan of teaching equipment. The library has a collection of over 4.2 million volumes of literature and materials, a well-equipped and well managed teaching practice factory and engineering training center, and more than 210 practice bases inside and outside the University. The school has advanced and perfect digital campus system, which is one of the first batch of Chongqing Education Informatization pilot units, and has won the title of "Chongqing digital campus construction demonstration University".

The school attaches great importance to the reform of education and teaching, and the quality of personnel training has been steadily improved. Students have made remarkable achievements in mathematical modeling competition, electronic design competition, "Challenge Cup" extracurricular scientific and technological works competition and other national competitions. In recent three years, they have won 768 provincial and ministerial awards. 30 awards at or above the provincial (ministerial) level were awarded for teaching achievements. Graduates are favored by all walks of life, and the employment rate of graduates has been maintained at more than 92%, ranking among the top universities in Chongqing for a long time. In recent years, it has been the "advanced collective of Chongqing graduates' employment". In 2011, it was rated as the "national college with typical employment experience" by the Ministry of education. In 2013, it was also rated as the "first batch of Chongqing ordinary college graduates' employment demonstration center".

The University actively carries out international cooperation and exchange, and has carried out multi form, deep-seated and wide-ranging cooperation and exchange with universities and scientific research institutions in more than 20 countries or regions, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Russia, Singapore, etc., through such projects as double degree joint training, mutual credit recognition, students' overseas study tour, overseas talent introduction, cooperative scientific research, overseas study visit and training. With the support of the Ministry of education of China and the Ministry of education and scientific research of Germany, and under the direct leadership of Chongqing Municipal Education Commission, "China Germany (Chongqing) automobile vocational qualification training and Certification Center" has settled down in our school. As the leading unit of China Germany automobile vocational qualification training and Certification Center Alliance, it cooperates with German handicraft skills development center to cultivate international high-end automobile repair talents. The University, together with Liangjiang New Area, has introduced the world-class famous school, Korean Academy of science and Technology (KAIST), to carry out undergraduate and postgraduate cooperation in electronic information engineering and computer science and technology.

The school's comprehensive strength and social influence have been significantly enhanced. Li Lanqing, former member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice premier of the State Council, commented in his book "interview with education" that the school "has grasped its strengths, developed its characteristics and achieved its level".
