Suzhou Institute of science and technology is located in the western part of the ancient city of Suzhou, the national high-tech development zone. It was formed by the merger of the former Suzhou Institute of urban construction and environmental protection (under the Ministry of construction) and Suzhou railway Normal University (under the Ministry of Railways) in September 2001. It is an ordinary university jointly built by the central and local governments and mainly managed by Jiangsu Province. The school focuses on engineering, covering 10 disciplines including engineering, science, literature, history, philosophy, law, management, education, art and economics.

The school has three campuses, Jiangfeng, Shihu and Tianping, covering an area of 2260 mu. There are 14803 full-time undergraduates and 940 postgraduates.

Subject and specialty

The school now has 14 teaching units, including the school of architecture and urban planning. There are 58 undergraduate majors, including urban and rural planning, civil engineering and environmental engineering, which are national characteristic specialty construction sites, 6 are characteristic specialties of Jiangsu Province, 5 have passed the professional evaluation of higher education, and 6 have entered this batch of enrollment in Jiangsu. In other provinces, more than 10 majors, such as architecture, have entered this batch of enrollment.

In 2003, the University was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as an authorized unit for master's degree. At present, it has 12 first-class master's degree programs, covering 71 second-class master's degree programs. In 2010, it was newly added as an engineering master training unit, with two engineering master's degree authorized fields, such as construction and civil engineering and environmental engineering. In 2012, it was approved to carry out the master's degree application work for personnel with the same academic level. World history and landscape architecture are the key subjects of the province. The discipline group of civil and environmental engineering, urban and rural planning and management are the first phase projects of Jiangsu Province; environmental functional materials and technology are the second phase projects of Jiangsu Province; civil engineering, urban and rural planning are the key disciplines of Jiangsu Province.

Faculty

The school has 1612 teaching staff, including 977 full-time teachers. There are 513 teachers with senior professional and technical positions, 163 professors and 305 doctoral degree teachers. At present, there are 227 master's and doctoral supervisors, 2 national "Thousand Talents Program", 2 provincial "innovation and Entrepreneurship Program" and 2 provincial distinguished professors. Among the full-time teachers, one was a member of the discipline appraisal group of the State Council, five members of the discipline teaching steering committee and two members of the evaluation committee of colleges and universities, and six won the national "May 1" labor medal, advanced workers and other national awards; There are 7 middle-aged and young experts who have made outstanding contributions at the national and provincial levels, 7 famous teaching teachers of colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province, 132 Provincial Personnel Training (funding) candidates such as "333", "Blue Project" and "six talent peaks", and 3 scientific and technological innovation teams and excellent teaching teams of colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province; More than 10 people have served as executive directors of national academic organizations and vice directors of provincial academic organizations, and many have served as editorial board members of international academic journals and domestic academic core journals. The school also hired a group of famous experts and scholars including academicians Shen Shizhao, Chen Zhaoyuan and ye Keming to be part-time teachers.

Since 2008, the university has undertaken 1859 scientific research projects including National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Social Science Foundation of China, including 93 national projects, 162 provincial and ministerial projects, and won 24 science and technology awards above provincial and ministerial level; 63 science and technology projects have passed provincial and department level appraisal, of which 3 achievements have reached the international advanced level and 36 achievements have reached the domestic leading level. The total amount of scientific research funds is 556.63 million yuan.

At present, the university has four provincial key laboratories, nine provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, one provincial engineering center, one provincial technical service platform, one provincial social science research base, one university science park and one enterprise academician workstation.

personnel training

The school adheres to the teaching work as the center, deepens the teaching reform, strengthens the basic construction of teaching, standardizes the teaching management, and constantly improves the teaching quality. Since 2008, the university has undertaken 10 national, provincial and ministerial education reform projects and won 3 provincial teaching achievement awards, including 1 special award and 1 first prize. "Water pollution control engineering" and other six courses have been rated as provincial excellent courses; in various extracurricular science and technology and cultural and artistic activities, more than 600 student teams and more than 1300 people have won provincial and above awards, including the first prize of the 47th IFLA student landscape design competition and other domestic and international awards.

Since its establishment, the university has trained more than 55000 college students and more than 1000 full-time postgraduates for the country. Graduates are generally welcomed by employers, and many of them have become the person in charge of the unit or the backbone of the industry.

international exchange

The university has established inter school cooperation with many universities in the UK, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Germany, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and other countries and regions. It has carried out student exchanges such as credit recognition, short-term study abroad, exchange students, etc., and also promoted various forms of teacher exchanges and scientific research cooperation. Students from Britain, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Australia, Ghana, Nigeria and other countries are accepted to study or practice Chinese. The school has undertaken 24 training sessions of foreign aid technology for developing countries organized by the Ministry of Commerce, and trained 462 environmental protection technology and management personnel for 97 countries in the Asia Pacific region and Africa.
