Founded in l958, Lanzhou Jiaotong University is the Third Railway University in China. It was established in Lanzhou by Tangshan railway University (now Southwest Jiaotong University) and Beijing Railway University (now Beijing Jiaotong University). From the end of the 1950s to the end of the 1990s, the school was under the leadership of the Ministry of Railways and implemented the industry management system. In 2000, according to the national overall planning, it was put under the management of Gansu Province, and the management system of "central and local co construction, with local government management as the main" was implemented. In April 2003, it was renamed "Lanzhou Jiaotong University" with the approval of the Ministry of education.

The campus covers an area of 1565 mu, with three campuses and a national university science and technology park. The building area of the school is 808800 square meters, with total assets of 2.337 billion yuan, fixed assets of 1.323 billion yuan and teaching experimental equipment of 242 million yuan. The library has a collection of 2222000 books, more than 4000 Chinese and foreign periodicals, 492000 e-books and more than 35000 audio-visual materials. It is one of the five major literature collection units in Gansu Province.

The school has 28335 full-time students, including 22400 undergraduates, 3119 postgraduates, 193 doctoral students, 2600 higher vocational students, 346 national defense students, 207 international students, and 20595 adult education students. In 2008, it became a Chinese government scholarship institution for overseas students. It has trained and recruited more than 1500 international students from 24 countries.
