Sclerotia on spikelets of rice, spherical, about 5 mm in diameter, green on the surface, orange inside, near white in the center; conidia spherical, spiny, green, 4-6 μ m in diameter. There were 1-2 diseased grains per panicle and more than 10 diseased grains per panicle. The glumes inside and outside the diseased grains split first, revealing yellowish green lumps, which gradually expanded. Later, the surface of the diseased grains was broken and gradually turned green. Finally, dark green powder was produced on the surface and cracks appeared.

This kind of false smut occurs in the Yangtze River Valley and southwest China, especially in the mountains or in the shaded fields. Japonica and glutinous rice are more susceptible to infection than indica rice.
