[plant morphology] evergreen tree. Stem cylindrical, unbranched. The leaves are clustered, round fan-shaped, leathery, about 70cm long, wrinkled, palmate when developing, deeply split above the middle of the leaves, lobes with main veins and 2-lobed at the apex; the petiole is more than 1m long, hard, convex below or on both sides, prismatic, with thorns at the edge; the leaf sheath embraces the stem, splits into brown fibrous hairs, and ring-shaped nodes can be seen after the sheath falls off. The inflorescence of fleshy panicle is short, drawn from the leaf cluster, with many large sheath like bracts at the lower part; the flowers are small, many, light yellow, unisexual, dioecious; perianth segments are 6, 2-whorled; stamens are 6, filaments are very short; female ovary is 3, base connate. Drupe globose or subreniform, perianth persistent. Seeds 1, oblate or reniform, dark gray or light black. The flowering period is from April to May and the fruiting period is from November to December.

Born in the valley jungle, or cultivated. Distributed in the south of the Yangtze River.
