[character and taste]: the rhizome is irregular cylindrical, long in transverse direction, with grayish yellow to tan surface, with raised nodes, and many slender roots growing on both sides and below. The root is cylindrical, about 5-8 cm long and 1-2 cm in diameter. The surface is brown, hard and brittle, and easy to break. The xylem is light yellow, the core is small, and the taste is slightly bitter.
