[plant morphology] Ganjiao (Southern vegetative)

Perennial herb, 3-7 m high, with stolon. The stem is erect and surrounded by thick leaf sheaths. The leaves are erect or slightly uplifted, oblong, 1.5-3 m long and 40-60 cm wide; the midrib is obvious, and the lateral veins are parallel; the petiole is more than 30 cm long. Spikes drooping, 60-130 cm long; bracts spatholoid, purplish red, lanceolate or ovate lanceolate, more than 15-30 cm long, falling off; flowers unisexual, the base of the bouquet for female flowers, the upper part for male flowers, male flowers falling off; calyx yellow white, 4-5 cm long; petals ovate, about half of the calyx long. The inflorescence consists of 7-8 to dozens of fruit bundles; the berry is fleshy, oblong, 10-20 cm long, with three blunt edges, yellow when ripe and seedless. The flowering period is summer and autumn.

Most of them are cultivated. Distributed in Guangxi, Guangdong, Yunnan, Fujian, Taiwan, Sichuan and other places.

[chemical composition] the fruit contains starch 0.5%, protein 1.3%, fat 0.6%, sugar 11%, ash 1%, vitamin A, B, C, e, etc. It contains a small amount of 5-hydroxytryptamine, norepinephrine and dihydroxyphenethylamine. The content of tannin and cellulose in leaves was 11.55%.

[pharmacological action] there are many norepinephrine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and dihydroxyphenethylamine in the pulp. The content of 5-hydroxytryptamine in banana from Japan is 10-15 μ g / g. according to the determination, the content of norepinephrine and 5-hydroxytryptamine in banana from Uganda is 2 μ g / g and 16.2 μ g / g respectively. Daily intake of 10 mg of serotonin has no effect on gastrointestinal function, but excessive intake may lead to gastrointestinal dysfunction. In the determination of indole or catecholamine in urine, should not eat bananas. It has neither anticholinergic effect nor central inhibitory effect. The juice of banana leaves and stems (containing 5-hydroxytryptamine but not DOPA or norepinephrine) can contract isolated ileum of guinea pigs and duodenum of rats, and increase blood pressure of dogs and rats. These effects can be antagonized by atropine and torazoline. The methanol extracts from dry leaves and stems had antibacterial effect, and the water-soluble part of the methanol extracts from mature banana pulp had inhibitory effect on fungi and bacteria. The antifungal substance may be musarin.
