[plant morphology] Jiujie, also known as Jiujie wood.

Erect shrub, 1-3 m high. The branches are nearly square and gradually cylindrical. Leaves opposite, papery, elliptic, oblong, 8-20 cm long and 2-7 cm wide, apex long and pointed, base gradually narrowed into a stalk, dorsal vein axillary with tufted hairs, remaining bald; stipules broad, membranous, caducous. Panicles terminal and axillary, 2-6 cm long, 3-branched, shorter than upper leaves; flowers light green or white; calyx about 2 mm long, lobes short triangular; corolla wide, about 1.5 mm long, lobes lanceolate, about 2 mm long, reflexive; stamens usually 5, inserted in corolla throat; ovary inferior, 2-locular, ovule 1 per locule. Drupe subglobose, 5-7 mm long, red, smooth; nutlets with 4-5 edges. It blooms in autumn.

Born in the wild. It is distributed in the southeast of China.

[clinical application] treatment of diphtheria

Take 5 jin of shandayan tender core or tender leaf, add 10 jin of water and fry it into 500 ml. 30-40 ml per day for children under 1 year old, 40-50 ml for children 1-3 years old, 50-60 ml for children 4-5 years old and 70-100 ml for children 6-10 years old, with sugar added in 2-3 times. Clinical observation of 118 cases showed that shandayan was the main drug (instead of diphtheria antitoxin) and other drugs were used. Results except one case died, all cases were cured. After 1-2 days of general medication, the clinical symptoms were improved, the body temperature decreased, the appetite increased, the cough decreased, the two stools were unblocked, and the pseudomembrane gradually fell off; after 3-5 days, all the symptoms disappeared.
