[plant morphology] crabapple

Succulent perennial shrubs. Stem erect or climbing, up to 1 m long; spines hard and sharp, 1-2.5 cm long, or 5 rows arranged on the longitudinal edge of stem. Leaves alternate, usually on twigs; obovate or oblong spatulate, 2.5-5 cm long, apex rounded and pointed, base narrowly cuneate and pointed, entire. There are 2-4 cup-shaped cymes arranged in 2 divergent umbels with long stalks; bracts are bright red, broad ovate or kidney shaped, about 8 mm long and 10-12 mm in diameter; flowers are unisexual, without perianth, male and female flowers are in calyx shaped involucre; male flowers are numerous, with 1 stamen; female flowers are solitary in the center of inflorescence, ovary superior, style 3, stigma 2-lobed. Capsule, 3-locular. The flowering period is from May to September and the fruiting period is from June to October.

Most of them are planted in gardens. Distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Guizhou and other places.
