[plant morphology] Gastrodia elata

Perennial woody herbs, 1-1.5 m high. The stem is linear. Leaves alternate, papery, oblong to broadly lanceolate, 4-13 cm long and 1.5-4.5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base rounded, margin serrate; petiole 3-4 mm long. Spike terminal, 3-15 cm long; bracteoles 1, rectangular round, longer than calyx; calyx 4-lobed; corolla purplish red, campanulate, lobes 4, slightly 2-lipped. Ca. 4 mm, triangular, inner surface with a hairy ring below the orifice; stamens 2; pistils 1. Capsule ovoid, ca. 4 mm, 2-lobed. The flowering period is from September to October. The fruit period is from December to January next year.

Functions and indications: clearing away heat, detoxifying, detumescence, relieving pain, promoting muscle growth and meat growth. Treatment of red and white dysentery, sore throat, red eyes, yellow swelling, gonorrhea, chancre, knife wound, carbuncle, gangrene, scrofula, skin ulcer, eczema, scald.

[usage and dosage] oral: decoction, 3-5 yuan. External use: grind powder, mix and apply, pound and apply or pound juice.

[prescription selection] ① for dysentery, jaundice, aphthous ulcer and blood in urine: sifangma, quancao and Wuqian. Take it in water.

② Fire eye: mash the whole herb juice with square hemp, add ice flakes and evenly point the eye.
