[plant morphology] Potamogeton

Perennial herbs, 30-40 cm high. Rhizome thick short, root thick long and curved, with wood. Stem many, clump, erect, base also with wood, quadrangular, tender when pilose. Leaves 6-10 whorls, narrowly linear, 1-5 cm long and 1-1.5 cm wide, with sparse hairs on the top when tender, margin turned outward, pilose below, midrib raised. Cymes integrated into terminal panicles, pedicels with grayish white hairs; calyx tube all healed with ovary; corolla tube very short, lobes 4, diam. 2 mm, yellowish; stamens 4, protruding; ovary 2-locular, style 2, stigma capitate. Suspensory fruit 2, oblate, ca. 1. 8 mm in diam., glabrous. The flowering period is from June to July. The fruiting period is September.

It grows in grass and wasteland on hillside. It is distributed in the northeast and northwest of China to the Yangtze River Basin.

The root of this plant is used as Rubia cordifolia in some areas of Jiangsu and Shaanxi. Please refer to the article "Qian Cao gen".

[collection] harvest in summer and autumn.

[chemical constituents] the whole herb contains toonoside, rutin, geranioside and chlorogenic acid. The volatile oil contains methyl vanilla aldehyde and sunflower element. The root contains primrose glucoside and purpurine glucoside.

[pharmacological action] the whole herb has cholagogic effect. The juice or Decoction of fresh plants can be used for external use to treat skin rash.

Functions and indications: clearing away heat and toxin, promoting blood circulation and relieving itching. It can cure hepatitis, swelling and pain of throat moth, boils and swelling, dermatitis of paddy field, urticaria, injury of falling and beating, and blood gas pain of women.
