[plant morphology] macrocarpa

Herbs perennial, up to 50 cm tall. The root is rod-shaped, fleshy, 1.5-2.5 cm thick, often twin, with pale brown outer skin and white inner surface, turning blue when dry. Stem cylindrical, ribbed and finely longitudinally striated, glandular hairy. Single leaf opposite, ovoid, 5 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, margin with coarse teeth, glandular hairs on both sides. The flowers are small, pink, arranged in 2-divergent cymes; the involucre is an 8-ribbed bract, closed near the mouth, enclosing the fruit; calyx limb is small; corolla tube funnel-shaped, lobes 5, nearly equal; stamens 4; ovary inferior, 1-locular, with 1 pendulous ovule. Achene 4-ribbed, enclosed in saccate involucre. It blooms in summer.

It grows in hillside wasteland, grass or under pine forest. It is distributed in Yunnan and other places.
