Pomegranate root

[synonym] pomegranate root bark (jieyuanfang) and sour pomegranate root (Gangmu).

[source] it is the root bark of pomegranate. See "pomegranate peel" for plant morphology.

[medicinal material] the dried root bark is irregularly curled or flat. The outer surface is yellowish brown, rough, with dark brown scaly corks, and there are pits after shedding. The inner surface is dark brown. There is no inner layer of bolt on the fracture surface. It is weak in Qi and astringent in taste. If the skin is complete and yellow, it is better. Some places also use bark as medicine.

[chemical constituents] the root bark of pomegranate contains isopomegranate alkaloid, β - sitosterol and mannitol.

The bark of pomegranate contains isopomegranate alkaloids, pseudopomegranate alkaloids and methyl isopomegranate alkaloids. The existence of the so-called pomegranate pericarpine in the early literature has not been confirmed, which may be isopomegranate pericarpine. The bark also contained β - sitosterol, terpenoids, ursolic acid, glyceritol 0.50%, sorbitol 1%, glycerol 0.05%, sugar 3.56% and organic acid 19.7%. The content of boron in dry skin is about 0.34%.

The essential part of pomegranate contains 0.21% alkaloids. Most of the alkaloids in pomegranate rhizome are combined with tannins.

[pharmacological action] 1

Pomegranate pericarpine hydrochloride (1:10000) can kill Taenia solium in 5-10 minutes, but 1:50000 can excite it. It was later proved that the effective component was actually isopomegranate. The anthelmintic effect of pseudopomegranate alkaloid is not sure. Fresh pomegranate peel contains a lot of tannins. Clinical observation has proved that the combination of alkaloids and tannins has better insect repellent effect than that of non combination. This is because tannins can make alkaloids become insoluble and difficult to absorb compounds, which can fully play a role on intestinal parasites. As pomegranate peel is more toxic, it has been replaced by better drugs.

② Antibacterial action

Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus haemolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, Shigella dysentery, typhoid and paratyphoid were tested in vitro. Proteus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Mycobacterium tuberculosis had obvious inhibitory effect. It can also inhibit a variety of pathogenic fungi. Its antibacterial effect may be related to its large amount of tannins.

③ Antiviral effect

The results showed that Pomegranate Peel Decoction diluted to 1:10000-1:100000 could still inhibit influenza virus. Its effect may also be due to its high tannin content.

④ Other functions

The pregnant rate of female rats or guinea pigs could be reduced after taking peel powder. The water extract of root bark can promote blood coagulation in rabbits.

[clinical application] expelling Taenia

Take 25g endothelium of dried pomegranate root bark, soak it in 300ml of water for 1 day, fry it to 100ml with slow fire, and take it at 9am. Take 20-25 grams of magnesium sulfate in the morning and 2 hours after taking the medicine. If the head of cestode is not discharged, the second treatment should be given every 3 or 4 weeks. After the tapeworm discharges, should enter the soft food, temporarily fasts the fat class food. Nine cases (5 cases of Taenia solium in pork and 4 cases of Taenia solium in beef) were observed. It is not suitable for gastritis.
