Evergreen trees, up to 20 m high. Leaflets ovate to elliptic ovate, papery, 8-15 cm long, 4-8 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, margin serrate; total petiole 7-10 cm long. Flowers small, unisexual, dioecious; panicles axillary; flowers pale green, apetalous; sepals 5, imbricate; stamens 5, degenerate ovary shield; female ovary 8 or 4-locular, style 3, undivided. The fruit is berrylike, spherical, as big as pea, brown or reddish. Seeds oblong, endosperm fleshy. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from August to October.
