[plant morphology] fennel

Annual herb, 20-40 cm high. Stems numerous, distally divergent. There are 12-18 basal leaves, 1.5-9 cm long; the leaves are white and oblanceolate; they are pinnately divided, with 2-5 pairs of 1-lobes, about 3-lobes; the small lobes are strip-shaped, about 0.3 mm wide, apex pointed; the stem leaves are small, sessile, and the lobes are filiform. Cymes with few or many branches; sepals 2, green, whitish, narrowly ovate, ca. 3 mm long; petals yellow, outer 2 larger, fan obovate, ca. 9 mm long, inner 2 smaller, cuneate, 3-lobed near middle; stamens 4, ca. 6 mm long; pistils nearly as long as stamens, ovary strip, stigma 2, style and stigma persistent. Capsule strip-shaped, ca. 5 cm long, ca. 1 mm wide, divided into 2 valves. Seeds rectangular, ca. 1 mm long, with prominent crisscross protuberances on both sides, dark brown. The flowering period is from May to June.

It grows on dry hillside, grassland, sandy land and gravel land. It is distributed in Liaoning, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, Hebei, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang.
