[chemical constituents] the fruit contains Tung acid, fatty oil, flavonoids and alkaloids

(1) antitussive effect

The mice taking Paulownia fruit decoction or Paulownia fruit ethanol extract had obvious antitussive effect (cough induced by sulfur dioxide or ammonia water).

② Expectorant effect

The trachea secretion did not increase in anesthetized dogs after oral administration of Paulownia fruit decoction. The ethanol extract of Paulownia fruit injected intraperitoneally in mice had obvious expectorant effect (phenol red method). Paulownia leaf foam also has expectorant effect.

③ Antiasthmatic effect

Intraperitoneal injection of ethanol extract from Paulownia fruit or Paulownia fruit had obvious antiasthmatic effects (histamine spray). However, the latter could excite the isolated guinea pig bronchial smooth muscle and rabbit intestine, but high concentration of the latter could inhibit the rabbit intestine.

④ Antibacterial action

Paulownia fruit decoction has no inhibitory effect on several common respiratory tract bacteria in vitro. The injection of Paulownia flower and fruit (not specified variety) (made by precipitation with lead acetate after alcohol extraction) has certain inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysentery, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Brucella, etc. in vitro test.

⑤ Experimental treatment of chronic tracheitis in rats

Rats inhaled sulfur dioxide to form chronic tracheitis. After oral administration of Paulownia fruit ethanol extract 1.5g/kg/day for 20 days, the number of goblet cells in bronchi of the treatment group was significantly reduced compared with that of the control group. The proliferation of columnar epithelial cells and squamous metaplasia in bronchi of the treatment group seemed to be alleviated compared with that of the control group, and the inflammatory changes were also slightly alleviated. There was no significant change in pulse and white blood cell count, but slight decrease in blood pressure.

[clinical application] treatment of chronic tracheitis

With fresh Paulownia fruit 8 Liang, decocting slag, concentrated into flow cream for 1 day, 3 times, 10 days as a course of treatment. 1341 cases were treated, the effective rate was 81%, of which the clinical control rate was 7%, and the markedly effective rate was 25%. If combined with Baibu, Platycodon grandiflorum, Qingguo and pig bile, the curative effect will be improved. This product has a certain effect on cough, expectoration, asthma and reduction of pulmonary rales. The effect of relieving cough and resolving phlegm is obvious, and the effect is quick. Some of them take effect within one day. The main side effects were nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dry nasopharynx and so on, which generally disappeared after 3-4 days. There was no adverse effect on liver and kidney function.
