Perennial herbs, up to 40 cm. Basal leaves numerous, petiolate, 2-3-compound, leathery, leaflets obovate cuneate or linear lanceolate, ca. 1.5 cm long, base cuneate, apex 2-3-lobed or half lobed, dark green above, glabrous, grayish blue below, hairy, margin slightly involute. Flowers small, lateral, curved outward, pedicel about 4 cm long; sepals 5, blue purple, thin white, about 1.5 cm long, about 1.2 cm wide; petals half shorter than sepals, lateral white, spur short, saccate, blue; stamens many; style thin and slightly curved. Follicles often 5-aggregated, glandular hairy. The flowering period is from July to August.

Born on hillside and forest edge. It is distributed in Northeast China.

② Aquilegia acuminata, also known as cat claw flower.

The main differences from the above species are as follows: large flowers, broad sepals, lanceolate, xianrui acuminate, purplish red or blue purple, light white; petals yellowish; long spur, thick, apex involute.

Born in Piedmont grassland, forest edge. It is distributed in Northeast China.
