[collection] the roots are dug up when the aboveground parts wither after autumn. The remaining stems, leaves and soil are removed and dried or used fresh.

[herbal medicine] the root is a fist shaped and thick round block, 3-6cm long and 3cm in diameter. The surface is grayish brown or brownish yellow. There are many nodular protuberances and intermittent arc-shaped grooves on the whole. There are stem base or bud marks on the top of protuberances, and fibrous roots or broken roots on the bottom. Solid quality, not easy to break, uneven section, fresh white, dry light yellow, chrysanthemum heart. Without Qi, the taste is sweet and light, and then slightly bitter. The roots of Panax notoginseng were soaked in 30% alcohol to make 10% tincture, or decocted to make 12.5% and 6.25% syrups (for school-age children). 20-30 ml each time, twice a day, 30 minutes after meals. 70 cases of adult patients, after one month observation, the effective rate was 88.6%, of which 21 cases (30%) were markedly effective, 41 cases (58.6%) were improved; 31 cases of children patients, 9 cases were markedly effective, 22 cases were improved. The average effective cases were treated for 8 days (the shortest was 1 day, the longest was 18 days). Some patients have increased pain in the process of taking medicine, which is often a signal of efficacy. If they continue to take medicine, the pain will disappear naturally. Tincture seems to be more effective than syrup. After taking the medicine, a few cases had nausea, vomiting and other reactions, especially those with a history of stomach disease.
