Annual or perennial parasitic endoplasmic herbs, 10-15 cm high. The stem is massive and spherical, thick and hypertrophy, irregularly divided, light yellowish brown, with light white star shaped small protuberances; the flower stem is thick and erect, red, extracted from the top of the tuber, 8-12 cm high, 1-1.5 cm in diameter. The leaves are alternate spirally, attached to the flower stem, degenerate, scaly, ovate, broad ovate or narrow ovate, orange yellow. Flowers are unisexual, dioecious, terminal inner spikes; flowers are small, numerous, dark red, densely distributed on the surface of rachis; perianth of male flowers is 4-6-petaled, deeply split, stamens are 4-6. Filaments united into monomers; female flowers without perianth, pistil 1, ovary elliptic, stipitate, 1-locular, 1-ovule. nut. The flowering period is from June to July.

Parasitic on the roots of woody plants in the forest. It is distributed in the south central and southwest of China.
