Xu Zhonglin
Xu Zhonglin (about 1560-1630) was born in yingtianfu (now Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province) and a novelist of Ming Dynasty. He lived in the last years of Jiajing and his life story is unknown. It is said that Fengshen Yanyi was written by him.
Historical records
Liang Zhangju quoted Lin Yueting as saying in volume 7 of the book of returning to the fields: Once upon a time, there was a scholar who used up all his family wealth when his eldest daughter got married. The second daughter complained very much about it. The scholar comforted her not to worry. Later, according to the words of "only God can be found in Wu Cheng chapter of Shang Shu" and so on, he perfunctorily wrote "biography of Feng Shen" as a dowry for the second daughter. After the second son-in-law published and sold the manuscript, he got a lot of wealth. However, Liang Zhangju's view in his "the six immortals" is different. He still uses Lin Yueting's words, saying that "the legend of immortals" was written by a learned Confucian scholar in Ming Dynasty, and his intention is to compete with "journey to the west" and "outlaws of the marsh". There are two kinds of views, one is that the author is beneficial, the other is that the author is famous. It is generally certain that the author is a more talented scholar.
The earliest known version of the romance of Fengshen was published by Jin Changshu Zaiyang in the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, which was stored in the Japanese cabinet library. The title of volume two of the book is "Xu Zhonglin, an old man in Zhongshan", so many scholars believe that the author of Fengshen romance is Xu Zhonglin. However, this is an isolated evidence, and Xu's life story is unknown. It is difficult to say whether he is the author or not.
Another way of saying, "the legend of Shun Tian Shi" in the seventh volume of the collection of legends says: "the legend of Feng Shen was written by Lu Changgeng, a Taoist in the Yuan Dynasty." In 1930's, Zhang Zhengzhen found that "Yuan time" was a mistake of "Ming time". According to the records of the eight characters in the volume of "rebuilding Xinghua county annals" in Xianfeng years, Lu Xixing, whose name is Changgeng, was born in Xinghua, Jiangsu Province. He was brilliant and talented. He is well read, skillful in writing and painting, and can understand the profound truth of life and heaven.
Unofficial History
Lu Xixing and the famous literati zongchen were famous at that time. Many times he took part in the local examinations, but he failed to get good results. So he abandoned his Confucian clothes and made a yellow crown on his head as a foreign tourist. He met several talented people and learned a lot of fairy secrets. Later, he wrote dozens of books about fairy Buddhism and annotated Zhuangzi as Nanhua Fu mo. Many scholars believe that Lu Xixing, who is good at writing and interpreting, should be the most suitable author of the romance of Fengshen. But there is no direct evidence. It can be said that the author of Fengshen Yanyi is still a mystery to be solved.
The Canonization of the Gods
