Rolling lantern is a popular form of folk dance performance, which varies from place to place. According to its spread area, it mainly includes Zhejiang rolling lantern, Fengxian rolling lantern, Qinghai rolling lantern, Songzi rolling lantern, Haiyan rolling lantern, etc. The lanterns used in the rolling lantern show are usually made of bamboo, wood, paper and cloth, with diameters ranging from tens of centimeters to hundreds of centimeters. It is composed of inner and outer parts, mostly spherical in appearance, with lights inside. Rolling lights are mostly performed by young men or children. During the performance, they usually perform such movements as cuddling, throwing and pushing, carrying dance, rope rotation and swinging, and some use ball lamp or lantern for skills and song and dance performances. The performance is accompanied by gongs and drums with strong skills.

It has been spread in the west of Fengxian District of Shanghai for more than 700 years. Fengxian is located at the entrance of Hangzhou Bay. There were frequent floods in history, so there was a ritual of Dai Erlang God dancing the lantern to subdue the water devil. In the long-term development process, Fengxian roll lamp from worship to entertainment, and then developed into entertainment. Every Lantern Festival, festival, harvest and promotion day in Fengxian Town, the celebration activities are all proud of dancing roller lantern. The rolling lamp is large in volume. In crowded places, as long as the lamp dances, the onlookers will flash to both sides immediately to open an unimpeded road for the lamp team behind. Therefore, rolling lamp is known as "the first of hundreds of lamps" and "the king of lamps".

Fengxian rolling lamp is made of 12 pieces of Moso bamboo, which can be divided into large, medium and small specifications. The lamp body is mainly composed of an outer ball and an inner ball, the inner ball is fixed in the center of the outer ball, the inner ball is equipped with a candle, and the large ball is also equipped with an iron pin. The lamp wrapped with red cloth is called Wendeng, while the lamp wrapped with black cloth is called Wudeng.

Fengxian rolling lamp's various action routines, after several generations of creation and development, have formed their own unique performance style. Traditional headlights include waist wrapping, white crane laying eggs, carp rolling water grass, etc., which focus on a variety of body language, such as jumping, climbing, running, turning, spinning, leaping, swinging, etc. middle rolling lamp and small rolling lamp also have different representative actions, and various routines are combined into various forms of folk dance I'm dancing with lights. Among them, more than ten sets of headlamp movements, such as "winding waist", "spider putting silk" and so on, combine various skills, such as spinning and jumping, and have a unique look; the mid lamp movements, such as "colorful clouds arch the moon", "Chang'e pan tou" and the small rolling lamp movements, such as "little flower" and "shaking hands", combine to make the rolling lamp show a colorful and moving style. The lantern rolling performance is accompanied by gongs and drums, and the costumes are mainly folk costumes. The soldiers play in short combat costumes.

The traditional performance technique of rolling lantern in Fengxian is not only the embodiment of artistic image, but also the symbol of the wishes of the working people in the past dynasties, reflecting the simple national spirit. It is a perfect combination of innovation and tradition that men and women perform on the same stage with many kinds of lights, accompanied by drum music and set off by music. At present, due to the impact of foreign culture, the survival and development of rolling lamp is facing great difficulties. A group of old artists have died one after another, and some high-difficulty skills are on the verge of being lost. It is urgent to strengthen the rescue and support.
