Introduction to Zhoushan gongs and drums
Applicant: Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province
Zhoushan City is located in the east of Hangzhou Bay and the northeast of Zhejiang Province to the south of the Yangtze River Estuary. Its rich marine resources are the basis of local people's production and life. The specific mode of production and living customs give birth to the unique folk art, among which Zhoushan gongs and drums are the representative.
In the old days, the gongs and drums of Zhoushan mostly appeared in the red and white wedding events, temple fair celebrations and fishermen's sea worship activities in folk villages. After 1949, this folk music form was officially named "Zhoushan gongs and drums" with the participation and arrangement of professional music workers. At the world youth festival held in Moscow in 1957, Zhoushan gongs and drums won the gold medal of the world folk music competition.
Zhoushan has a complete set of gongs and drums. The two main instruments are Pai Gong (composed of 13 gongs) and Pai Gu (composed of five drums). Their performance style is unique, with distinct volume contrast and rich sound color.
The representative traditional repertoire of Zhoushan gongs and drums include Zhoushan gongs and drums, preface to eight immortals, fisherman's music, sandiao, Chaoyin, etc., all of which have been included in Zhejiang volume of Chinese folk instrumental music, and many of which have been recorded.
After the 1960s and 1970s, due to the development of market economy and the diversification of cultural entertainment forms, Zhoushan gongs and drums, a regional form of cultural expression, gradually marginalized. With the death of old artists and the abandonment of Arts and business by a group of later generations, Zhoushan gongs and drums are in urgent need of protection.
