A brief introduction to the custom of women in Xiapu

Xiapu female custom is a unique traditional life custom in Southern Fujian, which is mainly spread in Xiapu, Jinqi, Houpu, Dongmei and other communities in Donghai street, Fengze District, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province.

The costumes of Xiapu women are commonly known as "big train shirt and wide legged trousers", and the headdress is commonly known as "zanhuawei". These unique costumes of Minnan fishermen reflect the characteristics of coastal production and labor. The commonly used jasmine flower, Michelia flower and coarse chaff flower in the headdress are said to be transplanted to the local area by Pu Shousheng, an Arab in the song and Yuan Dynasties, showing the flavor of foreign culture. Xiapu shell house is the most characteristic folk house in Southern Fujian. It has the characteristics of wind resistance and water resistance, warm in winter and cool in summer, strong wall and so on. It is very suitable for the windy and humid coastal climate. According to the research, the shell used in Xiapu shell house was not originally produced in Quanzhou, but was reproduced by the ocean going merchant ships from the ancient Erythrina port during the song and Yuan Dynasties. There are many traditional customs in South Fujian preserved in Xiapu, among which the wedding custom of "getting married in the middle of the night" and the sacrificial ceremony of "Mazu visiting incense" are the most prominent. Mazu's birthday on the ninth day of the third lunar month is the day of concentrated display of the folk customs in South Fujian.

Xiapu used to be the starting point of the "maritime Silk Road", leaving many traces of marine culture in its customs. Xiapu shell house is a wonder in the history of human architecture. This unique Minnan residence provides a historical witness for the spread of marine culture in the local area, and also becomes an important part of Minnan folk custom research.
