Sunan Yugur Autonomous County is located in the middle of Hexi Corridor and the north foot of Qilian Mountain. There are two kinds of languages used by Yugur: one is called "yaohur", belonging to the Turkic language family of Altai language family, which is closely related to Uygur and Kazakh; the other is called "angel", which is closely related to Mongolian of the same language family.

From the perspective of Yugur's historical origin and language, its folk songs have the same origin relationship with Uighur folk songs and Mongolian folk songs, and there are many similarities in lyrics and rhymes. In addition, there are many similarities in ancient languages. Yugur folk songs can be divided into "narrative songs", "love songs" and "labor songs" according to the theme and content, and can be divided into "Xiaoqu", "Haozi", "Xiaodiao", "banquet songs", "wine songs", "felt songs" and "milk and young livestock songs" according to the genre and function. It is an important basis for the study of ancient northern minority folk songs, especially Turkic and Mongolian folk songs, as well as the ancient northern nomadic culture and history, and also the basis for the excavation and development of northern minority music.

At present, Sunan County has sorted out and published the volume of Sunan Yugur Autonomous County (124 pieces), blessing grassland, Yugu homeland, fragrant grassland and other books, CD ROMs and tapes. More than 310 Yugur folk songs were collected.

In recent years, as the carrier of folk songs, there are fewer and fewer Yugur singers. Most of the folk songs have disappeared with the death of the singers, which are in urgent need of rescue and protection.
