Yuyao used to be an important cotton production base in China. Xu Guangqi of Ming Dynasty called "Zhejiang flower comes from Yuyao" in his agricultural administration book, and Zhejiang cotton was also called "Yaohua" in the period of the Republic of China. Since the Southern Song Dynasty, Yuyao native cloth has been used as the main raw material. It is famous all over the country for its long history, fine workmanship, various designs and colors, practical beauty and wide use.

Yuyao used to belong to Shaoxing (Kuaiji) YueDi, so Yuyao Tubu was also known as "yuebu" in history. Before the Southern Song Dynasty, Yuyao cloth used hemp and Ge as raw materials, and the book of the later Han dynasty recorded that Yuyao cloth (Yue cloth) was a tribute of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Yuyao has always had the tradition of local cloth, "Yuyao liucang Zhi" recorded that "in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the clothes were still plain cloth, the civilians, whether rich or poor, were dressed in coarse cloth, and the nobles were not decorated.".

In the past, Yuyao rural girls had to learn how to weave since childhood, and their skills were an important standard to evaluate whether they were clever or not. Yuyao local cloth has a wide variety of styles, and the traditional production process is complex. It is divided into more than 10 steps, more than 50 processes, such as cotton processing, spinning, yarn adjusting, dyeing, sizing, warp cloth, etc., and requires more than 20 tools. Until before the reform and opening up, Yaobei rural "every family spinning and weaving, every village weaving.". After the reform and opening up, traditional workshops are declining. At present, there are few folk workshops engaged in traditional local cloth production in the territory, and the only one that can effectively inherit is "Wang Guifeng local cloth family workshop", which is seriously endangered.
