Introduction to batik (Huangping batik)

Applicant: Huangping County, Guizhou Province

Huangping batik is a kind of national folk art product created, self-made and necessary by the women of Huangping leather family in their long-term production and working life. It has unique artistic characteristics and important historical, aesthetic, ethnological, anthropological and scientific research value.

Huangping county is located in the southeast of Guizhou Province and the northwest of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, with a total area of 1667.8 square kilometers and a total population of 355000. Ethnic minorities account for 4.2%, of which the Miao population accounts for 55%. Qingshui River and Wuyang river flow through the county.

Gejia batik has a long history and is one of the oldest traditional batik Arts in Guizhou Plateau. The colors of GE's Batik works are blue and white or black and white, with blue and black as the background and white as the pattern. The work requires that the pattern lines are pure and white, without sideburns and broken marks, clear black and white, clean and neat, which is an important feature different from other national batik works.

The composition of Ge Jia batik is unique, and the pattern has strong implication and philosophy. Gejia batik mainly takes the sun as the center of the composition. Gejia thinks that the sun is the center of the universe, and all objects are rotating around the sun. For this reason, most of the designs of the batik works created by the women of the Ge family are centered on the sun, which fully shows the harmonious artistic conception and artistic beauty between man and nature, and fully reflects the thoughts and feelings of the Ge family that love beauty, life and labor.
