Introduction to longdang (Yueqing longdang)

Yueqing dragon stall, commonly known as "stool board dragon", is a traditional folk carving art popular in Yueqing area of Zhejiang Province. It is said that since the Ming Dynasty, people in Yueqing have held mass processions and performances with dragon stalls as props on the Lantern Festival every year, which has a history of more than 500 years. With camphor tree and elm tree as raw materials, Yueqing longdang is made by round carving, carving, relief, openwork and other techniques. It is generally connected by movable baffle body and baffle plate, with a total length of more than 10 meters to more than 50 meters. The stalls are usually painted with gold lacquer, and then decorated with various kinds of carvings, lanterns, colored flags and bells. At the same time, they are also equipped with wooden handles for holding and performing. Longdang has distinct modeling layers, gorgeous colors and vivid and exquisite figure carving. When traveling, the exquisite dragon stalls are resplendent and colorful, which are combined with the noisy atmosphere of gongs and drums and emotional agitation to create a spectacular momentum. Yueqing dragon file combines sculpture and color bar art, with unique local characteristics. It embodies the local customs and the traditional ideas of the people in Yueqing, and becomes an important part of ancient Ouyue culture.
