Introduction to bamboo weaving (Shuxi)

Shucheng County, Anhui Province is located between the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River. It has a humid climate in the North subtropics and sandy soil, which is suitable for bamboo growth. Shucheng folk has the traditional skill of weaving bamboo mat since ancient times, and the famous Shuxi came into being here.

Shuxi has a long history. There are traces of bamboo mats in the Warring States tombs in Shucheng. Complete bamboo mats were unearthed in the tombs of the Western Han Dynasty, and their texture and technology are basically the same as those of later Shuxi. In the Tianshun period of the Ming Dynasty, Shu banquet was sent to the capital as a tribute, which was highly praised by the emperor and won the reputation of "long Shu tribute banquet".

It is better to use Phyllostachys pubescens as raw material. From material selection to mat forming, there are 15 processes including cutting, opening bamboo, breaking strip, cutting head, scribing, yellowing, even tearing, steaming, dyeing, scraping, drawing, sample preparation, weaving, edging and inspection. The Shuxi is bright in color, soft and smooth, with fine grain, continuous folding and easy to carry. It can be used in summer to cool and eliminate perspiration. It is durable and has high practical value.

The traditional products of Shuxi are mainly sleeping mats, while modern ones have developed new varieties such as tatami mats, pillow mats, children's mats, cushion mats, sofa cover mats, figure painting mats, mural mats and tea table mats. It is not only a practical summer good, but also an elegant handicraft, ancient and modern calligraphy and painting can be woven into the banquet, the picture is natural and beautiful, amazing. Now Shuxi products have been exported to Southeast Asia and other countries and regions, loved by people at home and abroad.

Because the production technology of Shuxi is difficult and the learning period is long, young people are unwilling to learn and inherit. At present, the weaving technicians in Shucheng are getting older, and there is no successor in the production of Shuxi. It is urgent for the relevant parties to take effective measures to ensure the smooth inheritance of this excellent folk craft.
