Huaiju opera is also known as "Jianghuai opera", "Yancheng opera", "Jiangbei opera", etc. it originated from Xianghuo opera in Northern Jiangsu. It is widely spread in Huaiyin, Yancheng and Yangzhou between Jianghuai and Shanghai, Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou on Huning line, Chuzhou in Anhui and Changxing in Zhejiang. At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, Jianghuai opera entered Shanghai beach and went through the early stages of development, such as building a pier, setting up a stall and pulling a curtain. It gradually stepped onto the professional stage from the teahouse opera garden. The Huai Opera Troupe in Shanghai has absorbed some Peking Opera actors, formed the characteristics of "Jing Jia Huai" in the performance, and made great progress. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, this kind of opera was named Huai opera.
The singing music of Huaiju opera originated from folk rap and labor songs. It is famous for its sonorous, bold, beautiful and simple. Its main tunes include "Huai tune", "La tune" and "free tune", which have distinct regional characteristics. After several generations of artists' development and inheritance, Huai opera has a complete range of roles, including Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou, and a complete program of singing, reciting, doing and playing. At the same time, it has accumulated a large number of traditional plays, known as "nine lotus", "thirteen English" and "seventy-two stories". Martial arts is a major feature of Huai opera, and the martial arts skills are deeply influenced by Hui opera. Splits, the handstand, the Oolong stirs and so on the movement may be called the unique.
Huaiju opera, known as "the legacy of ancient Nuo and the wonderful flower of pear garden", is a flower of opera art cultivated by Jiangsu and Shanghai. It is not only an integral part of Jiangsu local culture, but also closely related to Shanghai style culture. At the same time, it reflects the profound cultural characteristics of Jiangsu and the positive and innovative spirit of Shanghai style.
