At the beginning of the 20th century, puppet show and puppet show entered the entertainment places of Shanghai. In the 1950s, three puppet troupes from Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces and five puppet troupes with strings prospered the puppet stage in Shanghai. The Red Star puppet Peking Opera Troupe in Taixing, Jiangsu Province, is based in Shanghai with excellent art. In 1960, Shanghai puppet Shadow Puppet Troupe was established on the basis of the Red Star puppet Peking Opera Troupe. In 1962, it was renamed Shanghai Puppet Troupe.

Shanghai Puppet Troupe has learned from both Chinese and foreign stage arts to inherit and develop the characteristics of all kinds of Chinese traditional puppets and Shanghai puppet art. It is not limited to the performance of traditional operas, but draws more from other drama performance styles. Based on the stick puppet, it creates new puppet varieties. With its unique stage performance style, it creates a number of plays that are popular with the audience. Among them, "tall Ivan" put people and puppets on the puppet stage for the first time, and "Nezha God and titanium star man" and "toad and goose" won the "Wenhua New Drama Award" issued by the Ministry of culture.
