Sanjiang Town, Haikou City, Hainan Province, has a long history of doll play and unique features. Doll opera appeared in Hainan in the Yuan Dynasty and has been popular in Sanjiang Town for more than 500 years.

The performance venue of Sanjiang puppet opera is very simple. The stage is made up of wooden boards or tables, surrounded by cloth curtain and hung in front. The performers sing behind the scenes and control the idol performance at the same time. Dolls (idols) include the images of life, Dan, Jing, Mo, Chou and all kinds of animals. Their heads are made of wood and are lifelike. The singing of Sanjiang doll opera absorbs brother operas and Hainan local folk tunes, with banqiang as the main part and a small number of tunes. When singing, it is accompanied by eight musical instruments, which has a strong local flavor. Its performance program is flexible and diverse. Its repertoire includes historical drama, ancient costume drama and modern drama.
