In some areas, Hunan zhangtou puppet opera is also known as "Mu Nao Ke opera", "bang bang opera", "Ai Tai opera", "Di Tai opera" and "Guan Yin opera", while the troupe performing puppet opera is called "Ai Tai ban" or "Di Tai ban". The distribution of Hunan zhangtou puppet opera is the same as that of local opera. Where there are major local operas, there will be puppet opera. Hunan zhangtou puppet show is divided into Hengxin zhangtou puppet show, Changde zhangtou puppet show and Changsha zhangtou puppet show. Hengshan zhangtou puppet show is popular in Hengshan and Hengyang counties, Xupu zhangtou puppet show is popular in Xupu and Chenxi counties, Changde zhangtou puppet show is popular in Changde, Taoyuan and Huarong counties, Changsha zhangtou puppet show is popular in Changsha, Xiangtan and Xiangxiang counties.

Hunan zhangtou puppet show is famous for its traditional repertoire. The older generation of artists are good at performing short and tough zazixi, such as Lanma, Hongmenyan, luhuadang and stealing Xiancao. The inheritors of Hunan puppet show carry forward the tradition, draw lessons from the innovation, so that this play has been further developed. The newly created plays such as "golden scale", "Legend of the White Snake", "eight hundred Li Dongting", "malanhua", "Flamingo", "Hunter hailibu", "Frog Prince" and "stone three children" are deeply loved by the audience, and some of them have won awards in puppet art festivals at home and abroad.
